Insomnia

What is insomnia?

Insomnia

Insomnia is an interruption in the natural sleep pattern identified by one of more of the following:

  • Trouble falling asleep;
  • Waking up often throughout the night;
  • Waking too early in the morning;
  • Feeling un-rested even after a 7 hours of sleep.

Insomnia can cause many problems throughout your day, such as excessive tiredness (fatigue), trouble thinking clearly or staying focused, and feeling depressed or irritable. Insomnia is not determined by the number of hours you sleep at night but by the quality of your sleep. The amount of sleep one person needs may vary, most people require about 8 hours while others can do well with only 4 to 6 hours. If you awaken after a nights sleep feeling refreshed and renewed then you have a healthy sleep pattern, but if you awaken feeling groggy, tired and irritable you may be suffering from insomnia. Women are twice as likely to suffer from insomnia then men. Research suggests the leading cause is social factors such as divorce, being unemployed, and unresolved stress issues- all these factors increase the risk of poor sleep and insomnia. Menopause is also a key factor in women who suffer from insomnia, they have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep because of the hot flashes and night sweats.

Different Types of Insomnia:

  • Transient Insomnia (short term)- lasting for just a single night;
  • Intermittent Insomnia (on and off)- short term which happens from time to time;
  • Chronic Insomnia (on going, or continuous)- occurs at least 3 nights a week for a month or more.
